CASS

Students from the departments of Composition, ArtScience and Sonology

As well as the highly regarded Composition department, the Royal Conservatoire has another two departments for which the creation of new music and art is more central than the performance of pre-existing music. These are the Institute for Sonology, which has been a part of the conservatoire since 1986, and the interfaculty ArtScience which was set up in 1989 together with the Royal Academy of Art. The rich traditions from which these departments come have lead to an enormous multiplicity of aesthetic, didactic and technical approaches within the walls of the conservatoire. In order to profit fully from this multi-faceted environment it is important for the students of these creative departments to exchange ideas alongside their specific field of study, to participate in collective projects and to present work together during concerts.

For the second year in a row these departments present the CASS concerts, in which mixed forms of composition and improvisation are presented, from traditional instruments and electronics, from abstract music and theatre. The works are explained by their makers, and after the interval there is an informal discussion.
