The Art of Sound department combines training as a highly qualified sound director with a thorough musical education. In by far the most cases, music is listened to and made with the aid of technology. It is therefore better to put control of this technology in the hands of a musician rather than a pure technician. In this context, the term ‘sound director’ is to be preferred over ‘sound engineer’.

A large part of the students’ practical training involves arranging the amplification and/or the production of concert or studio recordings during the numerous projects carried out at the Royal Conservatoire and other venues. Students follow internships at prestigious studios and venues. There are also collaborative ventures with the VPRO, the Residentie Orkest and the Ensemble musikFabrik in Cologne.
