A student of the Music Education department is first and foremost a talented musician whose passion lies mainly in the artistic aspect of a musical education. The emphasis in the first phase of the course is therefore devoted to providing a broad musical background. During the main phase, the emphasis shifts to subjects relating to teaching methods, with students being challenged to reflect on their role as educator in a rapidly changing society. Future music teachers must always be capable of using their own musical artistry to inspire

young people and to show them the significance of music in a person’s life.

The programme has a very wide and varied network in the professional world, which extends from primary and secondary schools to the educational programmes of the Concertgebouw and the Music Theatre in Amsterdam, the Residentie Orkest, the Koorenhuis in The Hague and numerous national and international organisations dedicated to teaching music. Teachers and students from the department also help to organise projects, conferences and further education courses. Another aspect is the Music as Profession programme, in which the Royal Conservatoire promotes music education at primary schools in The Netherlands through research, curriculum development and teacher training.
