Thies Roorda

Thies Roorda initially studied at the Municipal Conservatory in Groningen (Netherlands) with Peter van Munster and then at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Paul Verhey. After receiving his solo-diploma he continued his studies in the United States with the English master pedagogue Geoffrey Gilbert.
Mr. Roorda is a flutist with the Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra and professor of flute at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and at the Conservatory in Groningen. He plays in various chamber music groups including the Hummel Trio. Together with cellist Dmitri Ferschtman and pianist Mila Baslawskaja he devotes himself to the classical and early romantic trio literature. Many composers have written pieces for him including Maarten Bon, Jean Françaix, Joep Straesser and Isang Yun. He has given master classes for flutists in Italy, Portugal, Russia and Switzerland.
In the Netherlands he has taken the initiative to stimulate a new sort of education in the area of breathing and tone forming. His vision has taken form in his "Blow How" courses for flutists, in which these subjects are dealt with from a strictly practical perspective without myths and prejudices. Thies Roorda has recorded CDs for the Attaca and Ottavo labels.

Thies Roorda studeerde aanvankelijk aan het Stedelijk Conservatorium te Groningen bij Peter van Munster en vervolgens aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Den Haag, bij Paul Verhey. Na het behalen van zijn einddiploma solospel zette hij zijn studie voort in de Verenigde Staten, bij de Engelse meesterpedagoog Geoffrey Gilbert.
Hij is fluitist in het Radio Symfonieorkest te Hilversum, en hoofdvakleraar aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Den Haag en het Conservatorium te Groningen.
Kamermuziek speelt hij in diverse combinaties, o.a. in het "Hummel Trio".
Samen met cellist Dmitri Ferschtman en pianiste Mila Baslawskaja legt hij zich toe op de klassieke en vroeg-romantische trio-literatuur.
Diverse componisten schreven werk voor hem, o.a. Maarten Bon, Jean Françaix, Joep Straesser en Isang Yun.
Hij gaf master classes voor fluitisten in Italië (Modena, Chiusi), Portugal (Lissabon), Rusland (St. Petersburg), Zwitserland.
In Nederland probeert hij het voortouw te nemen bij de stimulering van een nieuw soort onderwijs op het gebied van ademhaling en toonvorming. Zijn visie hierop kreeg gestalte in zijn cursussen "Blow How" voor fluitisten, waarin deze onderwerpen worden behandeld vanuit een volstrekt practische invalshoek, ontdaan van mythevorming en vooroordelen.
Van Thies Roorda zijn bij Attaca en Ottavo CD opnamen verschenen.
