Genevieve Murphy

Main Subject Teacher Composition (Guest)

Genevieve Murphy has a fascination psychology and disability, integrating this into her compositions and performances. Coming from a musical background consisting of piano, bagpipes and composition, Murphy has been including performative elements in her compositions for as long as she can remember. Her research is focused on the physical and sonic link between sound and performance in a way that one cannot exist without the other. She has assigned musicians to speak, asked them to read concentration tests as scores, given durational performances and played intimate recordings of her family. The composer’s musical influences cross between contemporary classical, electronic pop, punk and free improvisation. Increasingly performing solo and composing herself into the live concert as a performer, musician and writer, her work is often autobiographical, and performed between concert halls, galleries and theatre spaces.
