Excellence scholarships for the best Masters candidates

Students who wish to follow a Master’s programme and perform excellently in the entrance exam could qualify for a scholarship.

There are three types of scholarship:

  • The Holland Scholarship (HS) for students from outside the EU.
  • A scholarship from the Fund for Excellence of the Royal Conservatoire (FFE), for excellent students of every nationality.
  • A scholarship from the Residentie Orkest for participants in the Orchestra Master.

Although the eligibility rules and conditions of the scholarships vary, in every case the result is that the Royal Conservatoire’s tuition fees are covered.
The total number of Holland Scholarships and Fund for Excellence Scholarships available for the 2019/2020 academic year is eight (8). The number of scholarships offered by the Residentie Orkest depends on the quality of the auditions.
The winners of the Holland Scholarships and Fund for Excellence scholarships will be announced by the Conservatoire’s Principal on the nomination of the heads of department by no later than 1 July.

Exceptions

There are two exceptions:

Students who are admitted to the Orchestra Master receive a separate scholarship from the Residentie Orkest and are therefore not eligible for an Excellence scholarship.

Students who receive a Holland Scholarship are also not eligible for an Excellence scholarship.

Excellence scholarships for the best Master’s candidates

If you are planning to follow a Master’s course at the Royal Conservatoire you might be eligible for one of the Excellence scholarships awarded by the Fund for Excellence of the Royal Conservatoire. The Fund for Excellence awards annual scholarships at the level of the tuition fee for the Master’s candidates who achieve the best grades in the entrance exams.

The entrance exam

Your entrance exam will be assessed by a committee composed of the head of the relevant department and the department’s teachers. Students who are awarded a grade of 10 will receive an Excellence scholarship. If you are awarded a grade of 9, the committee will deliberate to decide whether you will receive a scholarship. The decision will be based on a range of factors

Awarding of scholarships

The scholarships are ultimately awarded by the directorate of the Royal Conservatoire on the recommendation of the exam committees and the heads of departments. If you are selected for a scholarship you will be nominated to the executive board of the Fund for Excellence of the Royal Conservatoire. The procedure is completed in June or early July when you will receive official notification from the Fund for Excellence of the Royal Conservatoire that you have been awarded a scholarship. The Excellence scholarship is an annual sum that will continue for the nominal term of the course provided you make satisfactory progress with your studies.
