Concerti Spirituali

Concert using our original 17th century organ.

Long into the 17th century, Concerto spirituale remained the name for a motet for one or more voices and instruments. While the Italian exuberance of the large-scale motet came into its own during festive days, the refined music-making of this Concerto suited the intimacy of the chapel and also the emerging Marian devotion. It inspired Claudio Monteverdi in Venice to a refreshingly modern style with influences from secular song. Understandable, because he was employed by the San Marco, but his activities were much more involved in musical life outside of it (madrigal, opera).

Royal Early Music will perform works by Monteverdi, Frescobaldi and Cima under the direction of Edoardo Valorz.
