Karel Schoofs, conductor

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Serenade “Gran Partita” in B-flat major, KV 361

Mozart composed the Serenade KV 361 for wind instruments in 1781. The work is also known as Gran Partita and was written for two oboes, two clarinets, two basset horns (a sort of deep-toned clarinet), two bassoons, four French horns and a double bass or double bassoon. In the period 1770-1800, it was fashionable for members of the nobility to employ a wind orchestra, which would perform during banquets or other festive events, for example playing arrangements of fragments from well-known operas.

The seven-part Gran Partita is one of the very best examples of this type of wind music. Anton Stadler, the clarinettist for whom Mozart wrote his famous clarinet concerto, gave the first (incomplete) performance of the work in 1784. According to an eye witness, the performance was ‘glorious and sublime! ... every instrument was played by a master.’ For the Radio West Concert, the instruments will be played by students of the Royal Conservatoire. The conductor is Karels Schoofs, the first oboist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and a teacher at the Royal Conservatoire.
