Musicologist Clive Brown will visit the Royal Conservatoire to work with students in the Early Music and Classical Music departments, sharing his knowledge of the relationship between composers' notation and performance practice in the Romantic period. There is evidence to suggest that the sound world in which Brahms created his music was radically different from our own.

This project will be an opportunity to explore techniques and elements of 19th century music, such as fingerings or portamento. Students will be encouraged to look beyond the notation to understand how composers might have expected their music to be realised in performance, developing students' theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills.
