Composing Spaces 2
In April 2013, the Royal Conservatoire's Institute of Sonology organised a festival and symposium entitled Composing Spaces: Spatial Music from Gabrieli to the 21st Century. In partnership with the Early Music department and the percussion department, the event featured instrumental and electronic music involving spatial placement of sound sources and/or musicians. The Groupe de Recherches Musicales from Paris brought their Acousmonium and The Game of Life installed their Wave Field Synthesis system.
Precisely ten years later, its successor Composing Spaces 2 has arrived. On 12, 13 and 14 April 2023 the event will again include concerts and lectures devoted to the theme of ‘composed space’. Besides music that is played spatially, the programme also includes pieces in which impressions of existing spaces are translated into music, such as the orchestral works Amériques by Edgard Varèse and Central Park in the Dark by Charles Ives. A particular highlight will be Luigi Nono’s No hay caminos, hay que caminar… Andrei Tarkovskij (1987), a work for seven instrumental groups arranged around the audience.
