Die sieben Todsünden & Der Kaiser von Atlantis
The Residentie Orkest and Dutch National Opera Academy bring Kurt Weill's Die sieben Todsünden and Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis. These two 20th-century masterpieces form an unforgettable double bill that could not be more topical, given the similarities with today's social and political situation.
Kurt Weill's Die sieben Todsünden tells the story of sisters Anna 1 and Anna 2, who commit the seven deadly sins in seven cities to save their families. Der Kaiser von Atlantis is a gripping parable about a war machine so destructive that even death refuses to do its job unless the emperor himself is willing to die first. Composer Viktor Ullmann wrote this work in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, but was deported to Auschwitz, where he was murdered, before its premiere.
The pieces contain humour and poetry and encourage self-reflection and a critical view the society we live in. Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience two masterpieces from the 20th-century opera repertoire in the special setting of the Conservatoriumzaal in Amare, The Hague.
The Dutch National Opera Academy is a two-year master's programme for highly talented young opera singers, focusing on the integration of singing and acting. It is a partnership of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatoire The Hague.
