About the production
Three young people, on the threshold of adulthood, are the innocent participants at the centre of a relentless battle of the sexes, in which they are mercilessly exploited by their respective representatives. As a result, they are confronted with the prospect of death. Pamina and Papageno want to kill themselves in their despair, Tamino risks his life in the trials with fire and water. Love and friendship seem to be the antidote to these toxic basic constellations.

In a new production of Die Zauberflöte conceived for the young artists of the Dutch National Opera Academy, an internationally renowned creative team examines the complex range of themes contained in Mozart’s ever-popular opera and seeks the essence that is still relevant to us today: the basic existential experiences that the three young protagonists must make on their way to adulthood.

About the opera
Premiered on 30. September 1791 at the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte KV 620 is undoubtedly one of the best loved and most frequently performed operas of the operatic canon. The allegorical plot was influenced by Mozart and Schikaneder’s interest in Freemasonry and concerns the initiation of Prince Tamino.
