Peter Dijkstra, conductor

‘Stabat Mater dolorosa’ are the opening words of one of the most famous Latin texts from medieval times, which describes the Virgin Mary in tears before the cross on which Jesus, her son, is about to die.

The Stabat Mater has been put to music since the 15th century and listeners have increasingly connected the compositions to the death of their own loved ones. The same applies for Rossini’s Stabat Mater, a work in which the narrative of grief and sadness, but also anger, in the face of death is beautifully expressed in music.

Peter Dijkstra studied choral and orchestral conducting and solo singing at the conservatories in The Hague, Cologne and Stockholm. He has been appointed as permanent guest conductor of the Netherlands Radio Choir from the 2018/19 season.
