Masterclass + concert Sunna Gunnlaugs / Maarten Ornstein / Tony Overwater

Sunna Gunnlaugs, Piano
Maarten Ornstein, Bass Clarinet
Tony Overwater, Double Bass

life = interplay, social play, band play
masterclass with emphasis on collaborations and musical development, creating opportunities and surviving

The trio will address a few subjects in this masterclass. They will talk about how to carve your space, create opportunities and hone skills to survive as a musician. Sunna, Maarten and Tony will also play some of their compositions, and discuss how the three of them deal with playing their own material and that of their colleagues. In addition, they will address how to compose for such a setting and how to rehearse these kind of compositions.

They clicked immediately when they exchanged messages on Twitter in the beginning of 2013. That summer Icelandic pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs and bass clarinet player Maarten Ornstein played their first concert at Reykjavik Jazz Festival, one day after their first encounter in person.
They liked playing together and the reactions were amazing, so they decided to record an album of original compositions in Iceland. The result was Unspoken, a record full of spacious and unconstrained performances. Since then they have performed in Holland, Belgium, Hungary. At the 2017 edition of Rotterdam International Jazz Festival they were joined by bassist Tony Overwater and London Jazz News wrote about their concert having marvellous air of freshness, superb assurance and lyrical gracefulness.

Their program highlights their fondness of jazz that is spacious, transparent and full of detail. The trio performed again at the Reykjavík Jazz Festival in 2019. The follow-up to Unspoken is expected this year.
