One Minute Symphony — Maria Rostovtseva

One of the ways in which students can gain practical experience is by joining an artistic shadow committee. These committees form a sounding board for the artistic director and the artistic committee of the Residentie Orkest and the members learn the ins and outs of running an orchestra and are also given an opportunity to act as curator and compile a programme. A new project has just been launched with the Master of Composition programme. Accompanied by members of the Residentie Orkest, Master’s students from the Royal Conservatoire visit the neighbourhoods of The Hague to talk to the local residents and then translate their stories into a short symphonic work: the One Minute Symphony. This project gives the students the opportunity to write a work for a full symphony orchestra. The compositions will be performed as part of the Residentie Orkest’s series of Friday evening concerts, with the première being performed under the title “Meanwhile in the city”. In another longer-running project, every year a number of Composition students are given an assignment to compose for a symphony orchestra.
