Residentie Orkest and students of the Orchestral Master – Master Classics with Mahler 5

Nicholas Collon, conductor
Rosanne Philippens, soloist

Friday 24
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major, KV 218

Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 5

Saturday 25 & Sunday 26
Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 5

The première of Mahler’s fifth symphony was performed in Cologne in 1904. The reactions were quite mixed. Mahler himself reported: ‘The conflicting opinions are tremendous; every movement has its friends and its enemies’.
We can scarcely imagine that now. Practically every conductor has at least one recording of this work to his or her name. The famed Adagietto, Mahler’s declaration of love to Alma, is familiar in practically every home. Nevertheless, a live performance of this monumental symphony is always an event to savour.

Through the unique Master’s specialisation, Orchestra Master, students who have passed an audition are paired with a professional mentor and have the opportunity to play in the Residentie Orkest. This concert is therefore also an opportunity to listen to the musicians of the future.
