Canceled: Rhijnhof Midsummer Music Evening

This event marks the tenth anniversary of a special collaboration between the Royal Conservatoire and Rhijnhof, the oldest cemetry in Leiden. A group of eight Composition students from the Conservatoire will compose works to accompany a procession through the cemetery. Different works written specially for this location will be performed at various locations. The students have been allowed to choose which location they wish to write a piece for. The works differ enormously in form and content. Based on the idea that the procession will be attended mainly by people who have lost a loved one in the last year, the students endeavour to reflect that theme on the basis of their own background. Precisely because of the wide diversity of the students’ cultural backgrounds, the programme is always very varied and rich. Some compositions are abstract, but many of the works draw on a device from musical theatre ranging from sopranos singing in a rowing boat on the pond to a fantastic installation with mysterious voices issuing from speakers around the park. In short, an intriguing and often moving experience.
