This afternoon Romanticism is central. On the program are works by Tchaikovsky and Brahms, romantic in character. Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet will be heard first, followed by Brahms' third symphony.

Romeo and Juliet is pre-eminently about the tragic side of romance. Shakespeare's poignant story inspired Tchaikovsky to write this symphonic work, whose love theme in particular has managed to win a permanent place in popular culture. In Brahms' case, the romantic character of the work contrasts with the personal motto that he incorporated into the first movement: the notes F-As-F, which form the opening and appear several times throughout the work, stand for the words, "Frei aber Froh. The third movement has had many more lives in the 20th century, including in versions by Frank Sinatra, Jane Birkin and Carlos Santana.

The orchestra is formed by students of the Royal Conservatoire under the direction of Jonathan Bloxham, assisted by students of the National Master of Orchestra Conducting.
