Spring Festival 2023

From 17 until 21 April 2023, the 56th edition of the Spring Festival will take place in Amare and the Korzo Theater in The Hague. The Spring Festival has become legendary and represents a great opportunity to keep abreast of the latest developments among the youngest generation of composers. During this year's festival, the artistic results of numerous collaborations with other departments in the Royal Conservatoire and with big names from the professional field will be presented, such as the Vocal project, a new series of works for the trombone and harp classes, and the result of our collaboration with the respectable New European Ensemble.

The Conservatoire's Composition department has traditionally been a breeding ground for new ensembles. This year the festival will open with a project called Hyperlinks, initiated by student Alberto Tombolan and involving students from several departments. On Tuesday, there is a musical experience with guitar, lute and poetry, created entirely by student Juan Montero Palma. On Wednesday and Friday: the Rerehearsals, short parts of the programme where students can present their own individual pieces. Finally, on Friday, there will be a concert by the Kali ensemble, created at the Conservatoire in collaboration with Krista Michaels. Throughout the festival, a number of concerts will also be framed by a concept by Jurijn Jonker. And, of course, there will be a new edition of the extremely adventurous collaboration with the students of the KABK under the name Madame Poire at the Korzo theatre. This is an event you do not want to miss!

This project is supported by students from the Art of Sound department.

Programme

The concert begins with Convenire, an open score for indeterminate ensemble of eight or more instrumentalists, written by Alberto Tombolan and performed by a large ensemble of 17 musicians, conducted by Roberto Antonio Jimenez.

Afterwards, Alto Terra, a hyperband started by Alberto and co-produced with Gregor Connelly, involving students and alumni from several departments, makes its live debut with a line-up of 17 musicians. A collection of pieces, originated from a jam session series in the recording studio, is transfigured through improvisation in a seamless stream.

The loss of a beloved one, our home, or the end of a stage of our lives are processes we all must go through. They put individuals in situations difficult to overcome by themselves, especially in a frenetic society that does not give room for suffering and reflection. This project was born to connect with those people and the people around them.

Nameless Elegy is an immersive musical experience for guitar and lute, poetry, and lights that seeks to guide the listener on a journey through the five stages of mourning: Denial, Rage, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Each of the stages is illustrated by a change in the color of lighting, a brief poem, and a newly composed piece, plus a musical prelude and a postlude also created for the Project.

A new imaginary space, built by the color of lights, the images drawn by the text, and the sounds of the strings will surround the audience in each of the stages. The poems will guide the psychological journey of the listener. They will be recorded and declaimed in Spanish, with a written translation in English, creating a whole with the music they accompany.

Soundscape's Madame Poire is the final presentation of the close collaboration between students of the Royal Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Art (KABK). Young makers present their instruments of the future in a theatrical concert.

Roughly speaking, one institute is concerned with sound and the other with image. This collaboration invites students from both institutes to work together and discover the power and joy of joining forces and disciplines.

Participants in this project are invited to design and build non-existent instruments. In addition to creating these instruments, they will work together on a performance showcasing their future music.

There will be three situations that will be performed at the beginning, in the midst and at the end of the concert.

These situations form the framework of the concert and every situation does not take longer than fifteen minutes.

A situation consists of three rounds, each round consists of two phases: the sonic phase and the physical phase.

The relationship between the two phases will be clarified when the spectator witnesses more than one single situation.

The cells that occur by being played on the piano in the sonic phase, will appear in the following Ramifications:

In collaboration with the wonderful harp class of the KC led by Ernestine Stoop and Sylvain Blassel, the composition department organized a special project with the extraordinary French composer Philippe Hersant who composed a large harp oeuvre. He wrote many chamber music works in which the harp plays an important role. Nine composers from the composition department were asked to write a "companion piece" in the setting of a Hersant work.

Tonight you will hear the works composed by the students. Philippe Hersant worked intensively with the composers and harpists prior to this concert.

The trombone curriculum includes plenty of room for contemporary music. In a workshop-like process, 5 students from the composition department wrote a new work for different instrumentation with or without electronics in close collaboration with their peers from the trombone department.

All trombone types are displayed, including the contrabass trombone: It sparkles, sings and roars!
