The Christmas Consort

December 15th 2017

Mieneke van der Velden, Daniël Brüggen et al.

A special Christmas concert with Christmas Carols and consort music by various composers from the late 16th and early 17th century.
The consort, or a homogeneous ensemble of a single type of instrument, is a particular favourite for gamba, traverso and recorder players. The sound of the instrument is magnified to enormous proportions reminiscent of the sound we know mainly from the organ.
This programme not only features the characteristics of these widely diverse groups of instruments. They are also used in opposition to each other or as mixed shades of music that emphasise these effects even more strongly. Finally, the whole forms an instrumental choir. For this special Christmas concert the instrumental consort will be supplemented with singers.
