Young Talent Project

Nederlands Dans Theater and the Royal Conservatoire’s Dance department have jointly organised the unique Young Talent Project every year since 2013. The project dedicated to talent development has two objectives. In the first place, it is intended to give the students of the Dance programme an opportunity to learn about the methods of the NDT and to further develop their talent as versatile dancers. At the same time, the project offers current and former NDT dancers the chance to gain experience as teachers, repetitors or choreographers within a professional dance institute. For the students, the Young Talent Project involves more than just learning the NDT’s repertoire; for three months they are also submerged evey day in the process of creating their own choreography at the NDT.

During the project, the students spend two months studying existing NDT repertoire: a fragment from Cacti, a work created by Alexander Ekman for NDT 2 in 2010, and a fragment from The Second Person (2007), a ballet for NDT 1 by Crystal Pite. Meanwhile, they learn a new work by choreographer and former NDT dancer Marne van Opstal. For the first time, this year the students are also creating a work of their own under the guidance of coaches from the NDT – former NDT 2 dancer Ève-Marie Dalcourt and ex-dancers and currently choreographers with the NDT, Spencer Dickhaus and Lukas Timulak. Drawing on the tools for improvisation and composition provided by the coaches, the students will learn to conduct research, to experiment and to reflect on their work. This new element of the project has been introduced to stimulate the students’ creativity by making demands on their inventiveness and aptitude for critical reflection.

The Young Talent Project concludes in November with four performances in the Lucent Danstheater, the home of the NDT, when the students from the Dance department will demonstrate the NDT repertoire they have learned and the new work by Marne van Opstal, as well as their own creation.
