This theoretical part of the entrance examination is for Bachelor Jazz candidates

The examination consists of one session (group, 60-90 minutes) of practical music making (singing) integrated with music theory.
One 8-bar phrase of a well-known jazz standard will be learned as well as the belonging musical parts:

  • harmony and voicings
  • walking bass
  • arpeggios
  • chord scales
  • improvisation (singing)
  • In this examination the following skills will be tested: singing, solfège, ear training, general music theory, improvisation (singing/scatting), practical stylistic understanding of jazz.

Description of the steps of the examination, the numbers correspond with the numbers on the candidate sheet:

  1. Melody. Singing the given melody together, then one by one.
  2. Melodic analysis, degree numbers or relative solmisations.
  3. Harmony. Dictation voice by voice (listening 3 times, singing, notation).
  4. Harmony. Naming of 7th and 9th-chord symbols of the written voicings.
  5. Walking bass. Dictation (listening 3 times, singing, notation). Naming intervals.
  6. Arpeggios. Dictation (listening 3 times, singing, notation). Naming triads.
  7. Chord scales. Dictation (listening 3 times, singing, notation). Naming scales.
  8. Paraphrasing (simple melodic variation). Compose and notate (silently, use inner hearing).
  9. Improvisation. Compose and notate (silently, use inner hearing).Singing.
  10. Singing your own written paraphrasing and improvisation.
  11. Sing a scat-improvisation.
  12. Optional: dictation harmonic variations on Turn Around.
  • Candidates for the Art of Sound program take an overall theory entrance exam, consisting elements of both Classical and Jazz theory.
  • Music Education students take the Classical theory entrance exam.
