Composition students get awarded at the Young Composers Meeting

15 March 2023

Young Composers Meeting is an initiative by Orkest de Ereprijs to give young professional composers under 30 a chance to compose for an ensemble and develop their talents, knowledge, and professional network.
During this week, fifteen selected participants from all over the world, rehearse the 3-minute pieces they submitted earlier. They are accompanied by experienced composers and attend lectures and individual lessons. The intensive week was concluded with a concert. The most promising participants, in the opinion of an independent jury of leading composers, got awarded a paid composition commission as an incentive.

Two of the three laureates are students of the Composition department in The Hague.
The Frank van der Wal commission was given to Niko D. Schroeder. Therefore he can write another composition for Orkest de Ereprijs.
With the RKST21 commission, Katherine Ching-Fan Teng gets to write a work for RKST21 which will be performed during the Andriessen Festival 2023.

The Orkest de Ereprijs commission went to the composer Isak Björn Heldund.

Both composers of the Royal Conservatoire look back on a really nice week.
Katherine: ‘The meeting was a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with Orkest de Ereprijs. It provided a unique platform to work closely with musicians and singers, attend lectures and workshops, and present our pieces in a live concert. The experience was both inspiring and educational.
I’m grateful and honored to have been awarded the RKST21 commission, and I am excited to embark on this new project and am eager to bring my creative vision to life with the support of the commissioning organization.’

Niko: ‘The Young Composers Meeting was delightful for several reasons; there were many opportunities to learn with the artistically diverse group of selected ‘young composers', the mentor composers offered advice and mentorship in many environments, and the artistic team realized our works with energy and professionalism. I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with the Orkest de Ereprijs again.’
