Marijn Migchielsen appointed as new main subject teacher bass trombone

20 December 2024

The Royal Conservatoire proudly welcomes Marijn Migchielsen as the new main subject teacher bass trombone. Starting in the 2025/2026 academic year, he will take over this role from Ben van Dijk, who has led the Conservatoire’s bass trombone class in an exemplary manner for many years.

Marijn Migchielsen studied at the conservatoires of Rotterdam and Amsterdam, where he began as a tenor trombonist before transitioning to bass and contrabass trombone. He trained with renowned teachers such as Ben van Dijk, Brandt Attema, Jörgen van Rijen, Pierre Volders, Remko de Jager, and Bart van Lier. In 2016, he completed his studies with the highest distinction.

His talent did not go unnoticed: Marijn won the prestigious Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Competition in 2015, the ITA Quartet Competition in 2014, and the Emory Remington Competition in 2013. As a professional bass trombonist, he has built an impressive career. Since 2018, he has been the bass trombonist for the Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, and since 2019, he has held the same position with the Balletorkest in Amsterdam. Additionally, he is active as a freelancer with all major symphony orchestras in the Netherlands and is a member of the Bruckner Quartet. He regularly performs with esteemed ensembles such as the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, Asko|Schönberg, and Pynarello.

Marijn himself sees this appointment as a significant milestone: "It is a great honour to succeed my former teacher, Ben van Dijk, at the Royal Conservatoire. I am very much looking forward to working with my colleagues to pass on the rich trombone culture that characterises the Netherlands to the next generation!"

Eleonoor Tchernoff, Head of the Classical Music Department, is equally enthusiastic about Marijn’s arrival: "I am delighted with the appointment of Marijn Migchielsen as our new bass trombone lecturer. With his broad background, he will not only ensure continuity in our bass trombone class but also contribute to our trombone section as a whole. Welcome, Marijn!"

With the arrival of Marijn Migchielsen, the future of the bass trombone class at the Royal Conservatoire is assured. His expertise, passion, and dedication promise to make a valuable contribution to training a new generation of trombonists.
