Side by Side 2021 - NPO 2 Extra

1 December 2021

On Sunday 5 December at 12:00 noon, NPO 2 Extra (Cultura) will broadcast a special documentary and concert of 'Side by Side 2021'. Students from the Royal Conservatoire play shoulder to shoulder with the professionals of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, conducted by the famous Sigiswald Kuijken.

Haydn – Symphony No. 99 in E-flat major (1793)
Haydn – Extracts from ‘Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze’ [The Seven Last Words of Christ] (1787)

Due to the circumstances, at the beginning of March 2021, the musicians didn't prepare for a concert series as usual, but worked towards professional audio and video recordings of Haydn's music. In addition to this registration, the 'making of' documentary provides a unique insight into the entire process of rehearsing and recording, especially under these special circumstances.

In addition to students from the Early Music department, Minor students of Classical Music were also involved in this project. Students of the Art of Sound programme made the audio recordings for the concert registration under professional supervision.

Broadcast:
Sunday 5 December at 12:00 noon on NPO 2 Extra (Cultura).
A rerun will be broadcast on Monday evening, December 6 at 10:30 PM.

During the project 'Side by Side 2021', Teunis van der Zwart (Head of the Early Music Department) got a chance to speak to conductor Sigiswald Kuijken about his first experiences with Early Music. Listen to the full Royal Early Music Podcast series via this link.
