Bachelor general information

As a first step in the admission procedure, we will consider your recordings and motivation form. Please consult this link regarding the application.

Video recordings: Please submit three or more video recordings with a total length of approximately 15-18 minutes. Choose pieces with different rhythmical feels that show your overall musical, artistic and technical level. Make sure to check the additional info and instructions per instrument below.

Upload the video recordings to YouTube or Vimeo. Make a PDF or word document listing the activated links and upload the document in ‘Osiris Aanmeld’.

Motivation form: Please download the form here, answer the questions including the specific questions for the Jazz department and upload the form to ‘Osiris Aanmeld’.

Theory test: Based on the recordings and the motivation form eligible candidates are invited to the theory exam. Find more info about the theory exam here.

Practical section entrance exam

Please submit the following video recordings:

Two jazz tunes in different rhythmic feels:

    • Medium swing tune, such as a Standard (for example All the Things You Are, It Could Happen to You, Everything I Love, Alone Together or a comparable tune)
    • or a Blues (for example Billie's Bounce, Straight No Chaser, Now's the Time, Some Other Blues, When Will the Blues Leave or a comparable tune)
    • or a Rhythm Change (such as Oleo, Rhythm-a-Ning, Moose the Mooche, Anthropology, Good Bait, CTA, Dexterity, Eternal Triangle, Suspone or a comparable tune)

A tune in one of the following categories:

  • a Ballad (such as Body And Soul, Darn That Dream, But Beautiful, What’s New, You Don't Know What Love Is or a comparable tune)
  • or a Jazzwaltz (such as Someday My Prince Will Come, Alice In Wonderland, Up Jumped Spring, Emily, Footprints, How My Heart Sings, Windows, Sometime Ago or a comparable tune)
  • or a Straight Eighth tune (a Bossa by A.C. Jobim such asTriste, Wave, How Insensitive, Corcovado, Retrato En Branco E Preto, or a tune such as Recordame, 500 Miles High, or a comparable tune)
  • or a Contemporary Jazz tune (by for example Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor).

A classical piece (such as a 2-voice Bach Invention, a Czerny/Chopin study or a classical piece by Debussy, Ravel, Brahms, or a comparable piece)

A free choice (“Carte Blanche”): A personal composition, arrangement or a piece of free choice.

Please record the repertoire preferably with live accompaniment. If this is not possible due to current circumstances, please use a playalong (iRealpro, Aebersold playalong, YouTube playalong, or selfmade playalong) for accompaniment.

Please make sure the playalong is heard on your recording.

Please make sure that you are fully visible on the video-recordings, we would namely like to see your hands as you play.

If you are invited to the second round, you will we sent a leadsheet (melody and chords) of a standard during that exam. You will be asked to play the theme and chords (including the chord root) solo at the piano as well as to improvise on the harmonic structure.
