Before you come to the School for Young Talent, you have to do an entrance exam for music, dance, or art and design. These departments all have their own application procedures. If your exam is successful, the head of the school or one of the co-ordinators will invite you and your parents for an interview. If necessary or desired, they will contact your previous school.

It is important to the Interfaculty School for Young Talent that talented students should not be prevented from attending the school because their parents cannot afford the tuition. There are five funds and institutions that can provide financial assistance to help defray the costs of their education.

Instrument Foundation Royal Conservatoire

The Royal Conservatoire’s Instrument Foundation offers interest- free loans for instruments of up to € 6000 for music students at the School for Young Talent and students at the Royal Conservatoire. Application forms can be obtained from Jan van Bilsen, the secretary of Instrument Foundation Royal Conservatoire. Stichting Cultuurfonds School voor Jong Talent

This fund offers grants towards the tuition fees, excursion costs or other study-related costs (including housing or travel costs). Applications must be accompanied by a letter explaining the reasons for your request for a grant.

We also require an income statement from the tax authorities for both parents (or parent). The statement can be requested from the tax authorities by logging on to Mijn Belastingdienst with DigiD. For more information click here.

Kledingfonds

Parents of ballet students can apply for a grant towards the costs of purchasing a ballet costume. The application procedure is the same as for the Stichting Cultuurfonds School voor Jong Talent (see above)

Allowance towards expenses from the Executive Board

The Executive Board of the University of the Arts The Hague awards grants towards the cost of tuition fees, excursion costs or other course-related expenses (including accommodation and travel). These grants are also available to students of the School for Young Talent. You can submit an application by filling out this form.

The Executive Board bases any allowance on an income test with the average income as the standard. To this end, you must enclose an income statement issued by the tax authorities from both parents (or from one parent if this is the case). You can easily request this using your DigiD via this link.

The application must be submitted before November 1 of the current school year. You can send the documents to CvB@hdkdenhaag.nl.

Stichting DAMU/Ministry of Education, Culture and Science

Students following secondary education at the School for Young Talent can apply for a travel allowance from the Dienst Uitvoering Subsidies aan Instellingen (DUS-I), the organisation that implements subsidy schemes for the Ministry of Education.

The aim of the scheme is to help talented students who have to travel long distances to attend a preparatory course at a school of music or dance (so-called DAMU schools).

A new, revised version of the regulation governing the travel allowance was published on 11 March 2020. One of the changes is that parents can now submit an application earlier. Another change is that the income threshold of € 50,000 for entitlement to an allowance has been raised.

Applications can be made between 15 August and 15 October of each year. The application form for this year is available online from 15 August 2021 here.

The criteria for 2020 are:

• the student must be enrolled at a DAMU school;

• the student must be enrolled in a preparatory course for a Bachelor of Dance or Bachelor of Music programme;

• the distance between the student’s home address and the school must be more than 25 km;

• the joint annual income of the student’s parents or legal guardians may not exceed € 65,000.

The actual allowance depends on the parents’ or guardians’ gross annual income:

• with a gross annual income of less than € 35,000, the maximum allowance is € 0.12 per kilometre;

• with a gross annual income of between € 35,000 and € 50,000, the maximum allowance is 0.10 per kilometre;

• with a gross annual income of between € 50,000 and € 65,000, the maximum allowance is 0.09 per kilometre.

If the sum of all eligible applications for an allowance exceeds the total amount available, the Minister will distribute the available amount pro rata to the eligible applicants.

Students who meet the above criteria can submit an application to DUS-I, together with

1. an income statement from the tax authorities (with your BSN blacked out)

2. a recent bank statement

3. proof of enrolment at a DAMU school

4. proof of enrolment in a pre-Bachelor programme

5. a copy (screenshot) of the ANWB route planner showing the distance between home and the school

The criteria for qualifying for an allowance towards the travel costs require the processing of various types of personal data. In compliance with the General Data Processing Regulation (GDPR) which took effect on 25 May 2018, DUS-I only requests data that are necessary to assess the application. The IT systems used to handle the applications also comply with the Government Information Security Baseline.

Request for double child benefit

Children who do not live at home because of their education may be eligible for double child benefit. The secondary school must provide some information with the application for this allowance. Information about this scheme can be found on the website of the Social Insurance Bank, or by following this link.

Each year, young talented students apply to the School for Young Talent to start their music, dance, or art education here. They all dream of the same thing: to develop their talent, express their passion, and to become a (possibly famous) musician, artist, or dancer. These children are between 10 and 18 years of age and highly ambitious. Some of them are not from around The Hague, but come from elsewhere in The Netherlands, or from Belgium.

Parents of children who live further away, sometimes prefer making use of a host family, rather than letting their child travel, during the demanding school days. Weekends and vacations are spent at home.

Children are educated here in various artforms, while attending regular school from fifth grade (the Dutch 7th group) in primary education and in secondary education (three different levels: vmbo-tl, havo,vwo). Therefore, the School for Young Talent is looking for people with the space and emotional strength to function as host families for one of these children. The children need a good home, where they can relax after school and comfortably spend their free hours.

Of course, host parents receive a suitable compensation from the parents for this service. The School for Young Talent has a mediating role in this: we brings the two parties into contact, and if it works out, we take care of the contract, which is signed by both parties.

At the School for Young Talent,

- students and teachers treat each other respectfully;

- everyone is welcome and safe;

- we take care of the classrooms and the building;

- it is strictly forbidden to use drugs or alcohol. Inside the building, smoking is prohibited and we do not put each others health at risk;

- commitments are kept;

- students do not interrupt other classes when they are free.

- the classes start on time;

- students who are asked to leave class always report to the principal or - in his absence - to one of the coordinators;

- the use of mobile phones during class is prohibited;

- eating or drinking in changing rooms is not allowed

- students are always responsible for writing down homework, test dates, and appointments. Whoever misses a class, makes sure they are being informed of any homework given;

- exemptions from classes are always requested well in time through the form at the ballet reception;

- absence is always reported by parents by phone or through a note at the ballet reception;

- boys are not to enter girls' changing rooms and vice versa. Students who don't study ballet are not to enter the changing rooms at all.

The Parents' Council (PC) of the School voor Young Talent (SfYT) wants to contribute to a fun and attractive school period. They do so in collaboration with other parents and stand in close communication with the school's principal and the directors of the various departments, in order to support the students in various ways. The PC helps in school activities and functions as mediator between parents and the school board regarding practical matters. The PC meets about twice a month.

The PC contributes to several activities and initiatives concerning the whole school. We are present at open days and auditions to provide information about the school; we organise the school party and a meal for all students. In December, we arrange the Christmas decorations and Christmas lunch for the teachers. At the end of the year, we award one of the students with the Incentive Price. Plenty to do!

Parents can submit their questions or wishes about the goings on at the school through email to one of the PC-members. Questions and suggestions are then forwarded to the school board and possibly discussed during meetings. The question, along with the reaction, can eventually be found on the website of the SfYT.

For many parents, the SfYT is far from home. The PC organises gatherings for all (host) parents to meet and exchange experiences. If desired, parents can contact the PC to talk about their (school-related) problems.

Of course, at the School for Young Talent, it also sometimes happens that parents feel that their interests are being harmed, or that the school's organisation doe not adhere to the promises made in the past. We assume that these parents will at first hand in their complaint with the school's princippal or the Executive Board of the Academy of Art The Hague (Postbus 11670, 2502 AR Den Haag). This way, complaints can be addressed within a short time, and most complaints or problems can be solved fast.

Besides this, the Academy of Arts is subect to the 'Integrity Code or Conduct Code'. This describes the framework within which eploqyees and students of the Academy treat each other responibly: in other words, what is considered appropriate conduct. The Code accommodates people to address each other concerning behaviour. In addition to the Integrity Code, the Complaint System Inappropriate Conduct and the counselors of the Protocol are part of the policy to ensure a safe working and study environment. As part of the legal protection of the students, the Academy has its own digital complaints counter to receive all complaints, objections, or appeals, to refer them correctly, and to ensure that they are being treated. Complaints in Dutch or English can be sent to the complaints counter KABK or the complaints counter KC.

Finally, it should be mentioned that parents, students and employees can, as a last resort, turn to the Stichting Onderwijsgeschillen in Utrecht. The foundation Het Rijnlands Lyceum (where our students are formally enrolled) is related to our complaints committee by these regulations.
