Gretha Tuls

Main subject teacher Classical Music Bassoon

Gretha Tuls was born in Enschede, The Netherlands, where Hannie Kruijt taught her the bassoon from the age of 9. She studied at the Royal conservatoire in The Hague with Johan Steinmann, prof. Gustavo Núñez, Dorian Cooke, and at the Musik Hochschule Mannheim (Germany) with prof. Ole Kristian T. Dahl.

Gretha will be starting as principal bassoon in the Residentie Orchestra The Hague from August 2018. She has held permanent principal bassoon positions with The Hallé Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (UK) between 2010-2016, and temporarily (2006) with the Norrköpings Symphony Orchestra (Sweden). As a freelancer Gretha has played with many orchestra’s around Europe, such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Academy of St. Martins in the Field. Her chamber music engagements include the Klangforum Wien, the Asko-Schönberg ensemble and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.

She has been teaching at the Birmingham conservatoire since 2011, at the Royal Northern College of Music since 2014 and has been invited as a guest teacher at Trinity College, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Scottish Conservatoire.
