Jos Vermunt studied choral conducting at the Utrechts Conservatorium with Reinier Wakelkamp, and orchestral conducting at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague with Lucas Vis.

He directs the Residentie Bach Ensembles (Residentie Kamerkoor, Residentie Bachkoor and Residentie Bachorkest) and the Toonkunstkoor Utrecht. He is principal study teacher in choral conducting at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

In 2006, Jos Vermunt, the Residentie Bachkoor, the Haags Matrozenkoor and the Residentie Bachorkest performed the première of Jan Rots' Dutch translation of the St. Mattew Passion. A CD of this was released by the label Deutsche Grammophon. Vermunt has conducted at numerous royal occasions, such as the funeral services of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard, and the christening services of the Princesses Alexia and Ariane.

As well as this, Vermunt performs as guest conductor with the Residentie Orkest The Hague and the Brabants Orkest.
