Teacher Jazz Violin

Dutch violinist Julia Philippens has evolved as a genre-surpassing musician. Improvising on jazzmusic or contemporary classical music became a second nature since she developed herself after her classical studies. During her studies Julia co-founded Fuse for which she plays, arranges and composes. With their bold approach to string music and a matching stage presence, Fuse rapidly became a one-to-watch formation on the cutting edge of Dutch musical life.

Fuse is currently the houseband of the Dutch TV show ‘Podium Witteman’. They performed on popular daily talkshow ’De Wereld Draait Door’, featured on Radio 1, 2, 4 and 6. They recorded the leader-music for TV show ’Opium’ that Julia composed. They released their Debut Album “Studio” in 2016 for with they got nominated for and Edison award. Their second album “Studio 2” received the Edison Public Choise Award 2019. Since 2012, they organize their own concert series named ConFuse, a platform for talent and our creative playground.

Apart from Fuse Julia is invited for different guest appearances by the Konrad Koselleck Bigband, Philharmonic Sudwestfalen, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Laundry Bigband and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. She have played and recorded with ao Justin Dicioccio, Ed Kowalczyk, Herbert Grönemeyer, Benjamin Herman, the Rosenberg trio, Ramon Valle, Michael Borstlap, Didier Lockwood, Ruud Jacobs, Peter Beets and Shakira. After graduating Cum Laude from her Bachelors in 2011, she went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude for her Jazzviolin Masters diploma stating she is a ‘unique, groundbreaking violinist, with a radiant stage personality.’

Since 2018 Julia started seriously composing music for her and jazz pianist Xavi Torres and Fuse, wrote the music for the videos of designer Ronald van der Kemp, and composed the TV leader for Opium.

Her Opus 1 “Hommage a Enescu” was performed live in Theater Tilburg by Rosanne Philippens & friends and was broadcast live on Radio 4. Her Opus 2 "Influent" premiered in December 2020 at Podium Witteman and in the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam). Aug 2021 the orchestral version of Influent premiered at the Veenhuizen Festival. Almost immediately after her studies, Julia was asked to teach for 2 years at the jazz department and teacher training at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Julia also gives workshops at festivals such as Oranjewoud or for Codarts.
