Music Theory Teacher

Karst de Jong studied Classical Piano with Geoffrey Douglas Madge, Music Theory with Diderik Wagenaar, Ineke Kien and others, and Jazz Piano and arranging with Rob van Kreeveld and Frans Elsen at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. He is currently combining his activities at the Royal Conservatoire with teaching improvisation and composition techniques at the ESMUC (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya) in Barcelona. 

Karst de Jong is active as a performer, music theorist, improviser and teacher, with a focus on promoting the integration of improvisation in the classical musician's practice. He taught many masterclasses of improvisation at internationally renowned festivals, among them the International Chamber Music Festival Schiermonnikoog (2008 and 2009), The Piano-Pic festival in the French Pyrenees (2009 and 2011), the Paul Badura-Skoda Music Festival in Vila-seca, Spain (yearly from 2011-2017), the Gümüslük classical music festival in Turkey (2012), the Valencia International Piano Academy (2017), and at the recent workshop of the future of the Graz University of the Arts (2017).

He has also been invited as a guest teacher and visiting artist at renowned institutions such as the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, CNSM Paris, Graz University of the Arts (KUG), The Piano Academy at Gulangyu in Xiamen, NYU Steinhardt school of Music New York, Senzoku Music University in Tokyo and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Singapore.

He regularly gives concerts with classical and jazz improvisations, both as a soloist and with different instrumental combinations. He has performed concerts in various countries in Europe, the USA, China and Japan. He published articles on improvisation and music theory and appeared at numerous conferences. He is a co-founder and board member of the Dutch Belgian society of Music Theory and was an editor of the Dutch Journal of Music Theory. Karst de Jong released two CDs with piano solo improvisations entitled "Improdisiac I & II". He currently lives in Barcelona.
