Internal Perception of Quality

The way people inside the conservatoire (students, teachers, staff members and management) look at the quality of the conservatoire and the educational programmes.

This is monitored by various instruments which constitute an important source for making improvements. These can be directly implemented, serve as input for improvement plans and feed into the cycle of external perception of quality.

Instruments used to measure, verify and monitor internal perception are:

The National Student Survey (NSE) is a nationwide satisfaction survey for students in which they can share their opinion about the course programme. All NVAO-accredited study programs and government-funded educational institutions in the Netherlands are obliged to participate in this survey. The NSE questionnaire consists of general questions and a flexible shell from which institutions can choose groups of questions.

More information about the NSE can be found here.

Each department forms a panel of students that meets regularly (at least two times a year) at the invitation of the head of department and facilitated by Quality Culture. Relevant subjects for discussions can be topics that students propose themselves, but also results of - for instance - satisfaction surveys and annual plans. The main goal is to maintain a continuous discussion with students on the quality of the study programmes.

Specific questionnaire for students upon completing a subject or project. The results of these evaluations are often discussed in student panels.

Triennial survey amongst members of staff about all aspects of their work at the conservatoire.

Heads of department indicate which developments they expect in the coming year or would like to see implemented backed by the results of quality surveys (e.g. student survey or consultations with the professional field of music) in annual Departmental Plans. These Departmental Plans are closed aligned to the Faculty Plan, which sets out the Royal Conservatoire’s priorities for a specific period as part of the implementation of the University of the Arts The Hague’s Institutional Plan. Read the Faculty plan  here.

The Institutional Plan of the University of the Arts The Hague describes the University's ambition and sets out the steps with which it would like to achieve it. Read the institutional plan 2019-2024  here.

The subjects discussed within these committees are often related to the quality of the programmes. This feedback is therefore regarded as highly valuable information that can be used to improve the study programmes.

Statistical data is regularly collected to provide insight into both artistic standards and educational quality. Examples of data of this kind are the number of applications/ admissions, the drop-out rates and a comparison of marks given by internal and external committee members for final presentations.

In response to internal and external developments, Quality Culture meetings are organised to focus on specific topics or situations. These meetings can be instigated based on feedback from students and teachers but can also be organised to focus on specific strategic questions from management and board of directors.
