Alum Demi Bawon wins Piket Kunstprijs Dans

28 November 2024

Demi Bawon, alum of Royal Conservatoire Dance, has won the Piket Kunstprijs 2024. The Piket Kunstprijzen have three permanent components: a prize for painting, drama and dance. The prizes are for professional young promising artists in each of these disciplines - one for all three. The artists are not older than 30 and have a connection with The Hague, either because they are or have been developing there, or because their work makes a stimulating contribution to the cultural climate in The Hague.

Jury about Demi

'Demi Bawon knows how to capture the audience's attention with her precision and concentration. Her energy is engaging. In the 2023-2024 season, Demi particularly stood out in NDT 2's programme Illuminate. In Jiří Kylián's 27'52’', she managed to strike the right balance between tension and relaxation, between razor-sharp movements and playful, light-hearted elements. Her appointment, in September 2024, to NDT 1 makes it clear that her talent is also seen and recognised at Nederlands Dans Theater.

Demi enchants the audience with her calm charisma, leaving them with no choice but to keep watching her spellbound. Her control of her instrument, her body, has nothing hard or tense about it; rather, her clarity and calmness show that she is in her power as a performer. Where others get carried away by tension or challenge, Demi, on the contrary, stays close to herself.' More information
