ECSTASIO
Under the baton of Sam Weller, the Symphony Orchestra explores bold and imaginative sound worlds through three landmark contemporary works. Thomas Adès’s Asyla, especially the third movement Ecstasio, is a rhythmically intricate and sonically vibrant piece drawing inspiration from club music – pounding, obsessive and mesmerising.
In contrast, Julia Wolfe’s Pretty blends classical technique with gritty, rock-infused drive. The result is raw, pulsing, and unapologetically intense. The programme also features Dmitri Kourliandski’s Riot of Spring, a provocative response to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
