A historic sound revived: inauguration of the 1824 Broadwood fortepiano

4 May 2026

On 30 April, the Royal Conservatoire The Hague held the festive inauguration of a special new acquisition in the Conservatoriumzaal: an 1824 Broadwood fortepiano. The instrument was donated by the Adriana Jacobafonds and restored by Chris Maene.

During the inauguration, students Ina Narkuté and Ágata Sorotokin brought the instrument to life with their performances. The programme also highlighted the restoration process and the historical significance of the fortepiano.

The Adriana Jacobafonds

In recent years, the Adriana Jacobafonds has made a significant contribution to the Royal Conservatoire, including the donation of historical instruments and financial support for students. The Broadwood fortepiano is the final gift from the fund, which will soon cease to exist. This made the occasion a meaningful moment to express gratitude for its longstanding support.

The instrument will play an important role within both the Classical Music Department and the Early Music Department. It opens up new opportunities for collaboration and for exploring early nineteenth-century repertoire and performance practice.
