Jan Linkens retires: a lifetime connected to the Royal Conservatoire

14 January 2026

During a festive evening, the Royal Conservatoire said farewell to two familiar faces of the Dance department. Jan Linkens retired as director of Royal Conservatoire Dance.

For Jan Linkens, this moment felt like closing a circle. He once began as a student at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. After an international career as a dancer, choreographer and teacher, he returned to the place where his own development had started. From 1 September 2014, he led the dance department.

During his years as director, Jan Linkens placed people at the heart of the programme. His farewell speech reflected on his personal approach and his attention to individual development. He gave students space and trust and actively involved parents in the programme as important partners in the learning process. Together with the team, he worked towards an open and close-knit learning environment, with respect and collaboration as core values.

The farewell took place during the annual Winter Project: on stage, in motion and in collaboration. That evening also marked the departure of deputy director Catharina Boon. The Royal Conservatoire looks back with great appreciation on the contribution of Jan Linkens and Catharina Boon to the Dance department.

At the same time, there is confidence and fresh energy for the future. As of 1 January, François Petit has taken up the position of Head of Dance.
