Maestro Honoris Causa
Composition
On 24 September 2026, the Royal Conservatoire The Hague awarded Martijn Padding the title Maestro Honoris Causa in recognition of his significant contribution to the Composition Department and the development of new music. Over the past thirty years, his compelling artistic vision has driven, challenged and advanced the department. He has connected young composers with musicians, ensembles and orchestras both within and beyond the Royal Conservatoire.
By encouraging exchange between composers and musicians, Martijn has strengthened the Royal Conservatoire’s long tradition of ensemble formation. Several leading contemporary music ensembles have emerged here. He also initiated Ensemble Royaal, an annual project ensemble during the Spring Festival, as well as The Composer is Present, for which he writes new repertoire for instrumental departments.
Martijn’s dedication and emphasis on openness and camaraderie have helped create a close-knit community of teachers and students. There is room for a wide range of styles and musical perspectives, for unconventionality, radicalism, playfulness and beauty, always underpinned by craftsmanship. Above all, the Composition Department has become a place where artistic collaboration, curiosity and lifelong friendships come together. With this honorary title, the Royal Conservatoire expresses its deep appreciation for everything Martijn Padding has contributed to the institution and to generations of composers.
