Hayo Boerema studied organ at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague with Johann Lemckert and church music with Marijke van Klaveren. There he also obtained his Chamber Music endorsement and Master Improvisation with Jos van der Kooy.

At the Rotterdam Conservatory he studied choral conducting with Barend Schuurman.

He took further improvisation lessons with Jos van der Kooy and in Paris with Naji Hakim. With Ben van Oosten he specialized in the French symphonic repertoire.

Boerema won prizes at various competitions and festivals, including in Vienna (1998), Nuremberg (1999), Paris (1999), St Albans (2001), Nijmegen (2004) and Kotka (2005).

He has an extensive concert practice with recitals both at home and abroad. He also regularly participates in (radio) recordings, both in cooperation with various choirs such as Laurens Vocaal and as a soloist.

Since December 2005 he fills the role of organist of the Grote or St. Laurenskerk in Rotterdam and permanent continuo player of the Laurens Orchestra.

In 2009 he received the silver medal from the French Société Académique d'Education et d'Encouragement 'Arts, Sciences, Lettres' in Paris for his merits for French organ art. Since 2010 he has been attached to Codarts School of Music in Rotterdam as a teacher of improvisation. Several CDs of his playing have appeared - including the integral works of Jehan Alain and the symphonies of Vierne - which have been very positively received by the press.
