Four teachers win Edison Jazz Awards

8 October 2024

On 7 October 2024, four Royal Conservatoire teachers won prestigious Edison Awards. These recognitions highlight their exceptional contributions to the music scene.

Benjamin Herman, teacher in Jazz, received the Edison Jazz Oeuvre Prize 2024. The jury report praised him as ‘alto saxophonist, composer, bandleader and, for more than three decades, one of the Netherlands’ most prolific musical personalities. (...) an unconventional, omnivorous, innovative, iconic and extremely likeable personality and musician.'

The award recognises his versatile and groundbreaking career spanning more than 30 years. In an interview, Herman expressed his particular delight at this recognition of his entire oeuvre: ‘I hope people now understand a little bit about what I'm doing, because it's so much more than just playing a bit of sax.’ Read the full interview with Benjamin Herman in the Volkskrant here.

Tineke Postma
, also a Jazz teacher, won an Edison Jazz in the National category for her album Aria. The jury described the album as ‘a powerful statement in Postma's development. With technical skill and discipline, she has dared to push musical boundaries.'

In addition, Stefan Kruger (Jazz teacher) and Stefan Schmid (Art of Sound teacher) and their band Zuco 103 received an Edison Jazz in the Global category for their album Telenova. According to the jury report, ‘Zuco 103 is reinventing itself. What remains are the very cool, compelling and ever-summery grooves. But on this beautifully produced record, the band shows its most inventive side.'

The Royal Conservatoire is proud of these extraordinary achievements and congratulates all the winners on their well-deserved awards.
