Maaike den Dunnen inspires next generation of music teachers and jazz singers

6 February 2025

Maaike den Dunnen is a jazz singer and composer. With her original music and lyrics, she regularly tours both nationally and internationally. Alongside her passion for music, Maaike has a love for teaching. As an inspired and dedicated educator, she is part of our Music in Education programme, where she guides students and pupils with her knowledge and experience from the music industry. She also teaches at the School for Young Talent.

Maaike shares her thoughts on the Music in Education programme:
‘It is a broad course in which artistry and musicianship are key focus points. In my lessons, students accompany themselves on the piano while singing. They create their own piano versions of (band) songs and perform them in a ‘solo setting’: piano and vocals. There are many creative choices they can make in this process, allowing us to meet in a highly artistic space.

The students in the shortened study programme and lateral entry also have very diverse backgrounds. Some have already been working as professional musicians for a while. I find great joy and fulfilment in tailoring my teaching to what truly inspires them.’

Recent achievements

Maaike has recently achieved several remarkable successes as a musician:

  • Second place in the Made in New York Jazz Competition
Maaike secured second place in this online jazz competition, which is open to participants worldwide and organised in New York City. Her solo arrangement (piano/vocals) of the 80s hit True Colors received high praise from jazz legends such as Mike Stern, Lenny White, and Randy Brecker. On 31 May 2025, Maaike will perform live in New York at the winners' concert, featuring the top three finalists.
  • Semi-finalist in two international songwriting competitions
Her original composition Starbright reached the semi-finals of the International Songwriting Competition, where judges include Mariah Carey. Additionally, she became a semi-finalist in the ‘Vocal Performance’ category of the Unsigned Only Music Competition, judged by renowned artists such as Jill Scott, Angie Stone, and Ruthie Foster.

With her talent and enthusiasm for both music and education, Maaike is an invaluable source of inspiration for our students.
