Calliope Tsoupaki is a Greek-Dutch composer based in Amsterdam. Her music blends Eastern and Western influences into a personal, open and timeless sound world, characterised by melodic strength, warmth and emotional depth. The New York Times described her work as “dizzyingly beautiful,” while Dutch magazine TM called her the “Monteverdi of the 20th century.”
Her acclaimed St. Luke Passion (2008) brings Eastern and Western traditions together. From 2018 to 2021, Tsoupaki served as Composer Laureate of the Netherlands (Componist der Nederlanden). In 2021, she received the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize for Thin Air, a work created in solidarity during the pandemic and subsequently performed internationally. In 2026, she receives the Johan Wagenaar Prize for her extensive oeuvre, currently comprising 160 works spanning solo and orchestral music, dance, theatre, opera and multimedia.
