The compositions of Calliope Tsoupaki (*1963) contain elements that refer to her Greek roots and her love of early music. The two aspects are most clearly reflected in her oratorio St. Luke’s Passion, in which she contrasts two musical worlds: the Western tradition and the East European, Byzantine tradition. This dichotomy corresponds with the Byzantine ideology that is incorporated in the icon of the Pantokrator, depicting two aspects of Christ.
