Master student Composition Arefeh Hekmatpanah has written a new work for Calefax Reed Quintet: Bhaad. The world premiere will take place on Thursday 14 November 2024 at the Stadsgehoorzaal Leiden, followed by concerts in Haarlem, The Hague, Tilburg and Amsterdam.
Arefeh recounts this experience:
‘I was commissioned to write a piece for Song of the Reed concerts by Calefax. The main inspiration of these concerts is Song of the Reed poem by the 13th century mystic poet Rumi, which describes the pain of those who are cut off from their home, like a reed cut loose from its reed bed.
I wrote them a piece called Bhaad (wind in Farsi), having this concept in mind, creating ‘an ascending Lament’.
It is such an honor to be working with Calefax; I had an amazing experience, and I learned so much from them. I find it inspiring that they are always looking for new voices and I was privileged to be chosen to craft a new work for their tour.’
