Midsummerevening concert: A unique musical journey at Rhijnhof Cemetary

19 July 2024

For years, the composition department has undertaken a very special project on midsummer evenings. A group of talented composition students is invited to write music specifically for the serene Rhijnhof cemetery.

Inspired by place

Each student selects a location within the cemetery that inspires them, crafting a composition uniquely suited to that exact spot. This personal connection to the space results in profoundly moving performances that resonate deeply with both the musicians and their audience.

Honoring those who have lost loved ones

A particularly meaningful aspect of this project is its audience. The concert invites individuals who have lost someone in the past year, providing a space for reflection and solace. On midsummer evening, attendees walk a path through the cemetery, moving from performance to performance. This journey allows the music to help them reflect on their loss and perhaps find a sense of peace and acceptance.
