DANSERYE 1551 – Tielman Susato

‘…most delightful and suitable for playing on all musical instruments’

A large Renaissance ensemble performs a selection of instrumental dances from Tielman Susato's Danserye, in an arrangement by and under the direction of lutenist and conductor Mike Fentross. The programme includes well-known dance forms such as pavanes, galliards, allemandes and branles, as well as works including La Moresca, La Battaille and Den Hoboecken Dans.

Tielman Susato worked in Antwerp as a composer and publisher. The instrumental dances in Danserye, published in Antwerp in 1551, are largely based on popular Dutch, French and German chansons and folk songs of the time. Susato harmonised these melodies in a charming and inventive way. In the final years of his life, he lived in Alkmaar, where he drew up his will in 1564. During this concert, you will experience part of his musical legacy.
