Side by Side 2027 brings together harpsichordist and Rameau specialist Patrick Ayrton, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and students of the Royal Conservatoire for a unique exploration of French eighteenth-century performance practice. Working side by side with professional musicians, students engage directly with repertoire, ensemble playing, basso continuo and improvisation in a collaborative artistic environment.
Central to the project is Patrick Ayrton's creative approach to historical music-making, in which performance, improvisation and composition are treated as inseparable elements of a living tradition. Rather than recreating music as a museum piece, the project encourages spontaneity, dialogue and expressive freedom.
For this concert, Patrick Ayrton has devised An Evening with Monsieur Rameau: a programme of instrumental movements and arias drawn from several operas by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764).
