Renewed signing of the 'MuziekopleidersAkkoord' at the Royal Conservatoire
18 June 2025
On Tuesday 17 June, the festive re-signing of the Music Educators Agreement (MuziekopleidersAkkoord) took place at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. This agreement brings together all teacher training colleges (pabo’s) and conservatories in the Netherlands with a shared ambition: to make music education a permanent part of learning for all children and young people. Her Majesty Queen Máxima, honorary chair of 'Méér Muziek in de Klas', was also present for this special occasion.
This renewed commitment marks an important step forward in strengthening the music education in the Netherlands. The agreement was first signed five years ago by all Dutch teacher training colleges (pabo’s) and conservatoires, with the shared goal of reaching more children and young people with high-quality music education. Since then, meaningful progress has been made. Music is increasingly integrated into subjects like math and language, digital tools are being used in creative ways in the classroom, and collaboration between pabo and conservatory students has grown stronger. Cultural partners, local communities, and Caribbean teacher training institutions have also joined the initiative.
During the programme at the Royal Conservatoire, we reflect on these developments and look ahead. Students, alumni, educators, school leaders and representatives from the education sector will join Koningin Máxima in conversations about the steps needed to ensure even more children and young people can benefit from music education through strong training pathways.
The renewed signing of the Music Educators Agreement is the result of a continued, collective commitment from all partners involved. The agreement is an initiative of the Landelijk Overleg Lerarenopleiding Basisonderwijs (LOBO), the Network of Music Teacher Educators at Teacher Training Colleges (NMP), the Network of Conservatory Directors (Netwerk Muziek), the Music Teacher Education Working Group (O2DM), and Méér Muziek in de Klas.
Together, we continue to work toward a future where music is a natural part of every child’s development.
