The Royal Conservatoire in a Changing World

5 September 2024

Inaugural Speech 2024-2025

'As we begin the new academic year 2024-2025, we embark upon a new chapter in the rich history of our conservatoire. This moment not only marks a time of anticipation and excitement, but also a moment of reflection on the challenges and responsibilities ahead. In a world that is rapidly changing, our institution remains a beacon of artistic innovation and cultural engagement. But what does this mean concretely for us as a community of students, teachers, and staff?

Art as an Essential Lifeline

At a time when the value of art is often questioned, we as a conservatoire want to convey a powerful message: art is not a luxury, but an essential lifeline. Art’s ability to connect people, encourage reflection, and offer new perspectives makes it an indispensable force in both personal and societal contexts. Art is deeply interwoven with our daily lives, visible in the architecture that surrounds us, the music that moves us, and the dance that inspires us. Our institution carries the responsibility to cherish, renew, and make our art forms accessible to future generations. This means that we not only focus on preserving traditions but also on continuously renewing them. We encourage our students to find their own voice and explore new paths within the artistic world. This is a great ambition, but it is a task that lies at the heart of our existence as an educational institution.

Innovation and Diversity as Core Values

Our conservatoire is more than just a place of learning; it is a breeding ground for experimentation and growth. In a world where boundaries are blurring and cultural diversity is becoming increasingly important, we see it as our mission to create an inclusive and international community. This is reflected in our collaborations, such as the European IN.TUNE alliance, and in our daily efforts to foster an open and diverse learning environment.

We strongly believe in the value of connection without limitations. Art knows no geographical, social, or societal boundaries, and education should not isolate itself in a closed environment. It is precisely this interaction between different cultures and perspectives that prepares our students for the challenges of the future and life beyond the Royal Conservatoire. We feel the pressure of looming cuts in the cultural sector and higher education, the lack of structural support for Dutch talent policies, and the undervaluation of an international perspective. Despite these challenges, we remain committed to protecting our core values and identity, ensuring that art remains accessible to all and not confined to a select group.

Responsibility in a Changing World

The world faces countless conflicts and divisions and we see it as our duty to offer a counter-narrative. Art has the power to bring people together, to create dialogue and understanding where it is sometimes lacking. It is our responsibility, as artists and as an institution, to take this responsibility seriously and contribute to a more connected and harmonious society.

Our conservatoire stands for a culture of respect, dialogue, and inclusivity. Although we have already made great strides in creating a safe and open environment, we remain aware of the challenges that lie ahead. Stories of exclusion and prejudice remind us that there is still work to be done. However, it gives us hope that these stories are increasingly coming to light and being actively addressed. We are committed to our task of creating an environment where everyone feels heard and respected, both within our walls and in broader society.

A Call to Action

I call upon you, all members of our community, both within and beyond the conservatoire, to be part of this mission. To make your voice heard, to listen, to respect, and to innovate. We will support you in your quest to find your unique voice and help you make it resonate in the world. Together, we are building a future in which art and culture continue to flourish and in which we, as artists and as people, have a positive impact on the world around us.

This new academic year offers us all the chance to make a difference. Let us seize that opportunity with both hands. For we, the conservatoire community, are not only the guardians of a rich tradition but also the driving force behind continuous renewal and the pursuit of a better world. Let us embrace this responsibility and move forward together, with determination and hope.

In doing so, we not only inspire each other and our internal community but also send a clear message to the outside world: the conservatoire is at the heart of society and is ready to face the challenges of our time. Let us work together towards a future where art continues to grow and flourish, for everyone.'
