After his study for school music teacher at the Royal Conservatoire, Adri de Vugt studied pedagogy at the Hogeschool Katholieke Leergangen and education studies at Utrecht University. For years he was music teacher in secondary education and was a lecturer teaching methodology at the University of Leiden. He is currently working full time at the Royal Conservatoire as teacher education pedagogy and music education at the studies fr Music Teaching and Vocal/Instrumental. He published (inter)nationally  about learning and music, competency of music teachers and music teaching research. He is a member of the Advisory Board Research in Music Education. Since 2011, he served as President of the European Association for Music in Schools (EAS).
