Martje van Damme

Piano teacher

Martje van Damme (Kampen, 1991) is a classical pianist with a strong focus on chamber music. She began playing the piano at the age of eight. When the piano was delivered to her home, she repeatedly played the same melody she had heard her mother try out while selecting the instrument. This marked the beginning of her exploration of the piano, and she quickly began playing music by J.S. Bach and Tchaikovsky.

At the age of fourteen, she auditioned for the Academie Muzikaal Talent, where she studied with Henk Ekkel. This was an inspiring time for her, offering valuable stage experience and many opportunities to perform chamber music. During the summer course Musik Zentral, led by Martyn van den Hoek, she discovered her passion for accompanying. This interest became central to her studies when she began her Bachelor of Music in Düsseldorf, where she received training in Lied accompaniment from Hans Eijsackers.

She participated in various masterclasses, including those given by Martyn van den Hoek, Klára Würtz, Andreas Woyke, Dmitri Paperno and Helen Krizos, and studied for five years at the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf with Paolo Giacometti, graduating cum laude in 2016. She went on to complete her Master of Music at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, where she studied with David Kuyken.

Martje performs regularly as a soloist in the Netherlands, including appearances in Dat Bolwerck in Zutphen, the Concertgemaal, and studio H67 in Amsterdam. She also works with various singers and choirs, and since 2018 she has been part of the Artist Pianoduo alongside Spanish pianist Inés Costales.

Since 2024, she has also been teaching piano at the Royal Conservatoire in the PI programme, designed for children aged 5 to 7. She is currently working on a CD recording featuring piano works by Granados.
