The Royal Conservatoire is a partner in The Hague Music Centre's Music & Dementia project in collaboration with Woonzorg Haaglanden. Master students taking the optional subject Socially Engaged Artistic Practice do an internship in the Music & Dementia projects offered by The Hague Music Centre in two care homes of Woonzorg Haaglanden (Transvaal and Leidschendam). For eight consecutive weeks, they actively play music with residents who stay there permanently because of advanced dementia. A crucial element is that the staff who care for them daily are also involved in the project. Carers get to know their clients differently through this project: as persons who, despite their illness, are able to express their feelings, to be cheerful or, on the contrary, rebellious. Residents can reconnect with the outside world through music. Making music together every week has a healing effect and promotes the well-being of residents and care staff. This project of The Hague Music Centre grew out of an initiative of the Royal Conservatoire. Musicians are prepared for this intensive but highly meaningful practical experience through training.
Socially Engaged Artistic Practice is an elective course available to all Master students at the Royal Conservatoire.
